What is Asia@home?

Asia@home is an umbrella project to promote volunteer computing in South East Asia. Volunteer computing is a cheap and powerful alternative for scientists in the region to harness huge amounts of computing power as well as scientific support, through citizen cyberscience projects based on the concepts of volunteer computing and volunteer thinking, using primarily the software platforms BOINC and Bossa.

Who is Asia@home?

Asia@Home is coordinated by Francois Grey for the Citizen Cyberscience Centre, and is supported by Academia Sinica Grid Computing in Taipei, Project Director Simon Lin, as well as the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, Head of Computing Centre, Gang Chen.

What does Asia@home do?

In 2009 a first Asia@home workshop was held during ISGC 2009 in Taipei, followed by a seminar at IHEP in Beijing. In 2010, a brainstorming session was held during ISGC 2010 in Taipei, followed by a Master Class at IHEP in Beijing (see below for details of these most recent events).

ASIA@HOME: A BRAINSTORMING ON VOLUNTEER COMPUTING FOR ASIA

6 March 2010, International Symposium on Grid Computing, Academia Sinica, Taipei

Last year, an Asia@home workshop was held at Academia Sinica to promote the use of volunteer computing in South-East Asia. As a result, Academia Sinica Grid Computing launched several projects involving the volunteer computing platform BOINC. One year later, the purpose of this brainstorming is to review progress so far, brainstorm about possible new directions, and map out a timeline for future work.
